Comic List template

I REALLY like this one...and I think ya'lls take on the Comic List Template may be VERY beneficial on the Marvel side as well. If I steal formatting ideas like this, is it considered plagiarism? :? Either way, I have been wishing for a good idea on a template change and you have definitely piqued my interest! Thanks!

I personally love the suggestion, but am no longer all that familiar with DC's Comic List code.

If no one else can take a whack at it, lemme know. :)

Oh, I didn't read the DPL Part. Everything else is doable, the DPL induction would take up a TON of server load, since some comic lists would contain 500+ issues.

Does it run DPL every time the page is accessed?

Also, if we have standardized the naming of the comics, can't the template automatically generate a list of issues so we don't need to type them out?

:( There's DPL involved??? Argh!!! Now I remember why we kept them separate between the sites.

No, I don't think either site really uses much DPL in the Comic List template, if any. (Remember the problems we had with Avengers Vol 1, Uncanny X-Men, and Amazing Spider-Man?)

There's just talk of further automating the comic list template on the DC side using DPL to create the list.

Right, but I assume that DPL is used in the Template:Month Category that pulls together all the comics/links/covers for each particular month. I was just htinking of something like that for Comic List.

Yea, the only real reasons the month category stuff works are that those pages aren't viewed all that much and there's kind of a cap on how many comics could come out in a month. Even with Marvel's recent insanity, they'll never put out 500 comics in a single month, where a comic list could easily have more than that.

Also, the way the month category thing works is that it grabs the covers and links to pages that are already created, so it won't add links and covers (or None.jpg) for books that don't have a page made yet. So say pages existed for #1 and #3, but not #2 or #4, and #5 was coming out next month. The DPL would only have links and covers for 1 and 3, and wouldn't offer red links to make 2 or 4, and wouldn't add #5 until both the page was created, and the comic list was re-saved.

Sorry, I knew there were reasons why we weren't already doing this (I wanted to do it pretty bad too), but I couldn't remember why until just now when I really thought about it.

Maybe it makes more sense now?

It WOULD be possible to create a little template that would write out a gallery of all the comics in the volume, but after the first time it's saved, it would be manual to edit it after that...

Would it be useful to put the above information in the Discussion page for the relevetn template? Dividing this kind of into between the wiki and the boards is ... unhelpful. (We do the same thing at work, with calculations in one directory, and the report they're used in in another - silly).

Yes! It's hard to keep track of where these discussions run off to...

Anybody want to take a crack at this, without the DPL component?
