Are British copies of books worth any more?

Postby TubaGeek » Tue Mar 09, 2010 10:43 pm

Hey, I've got a Fantastic Four #88, and in the price box it says "1/-." I've been told that this means that cost a shilling. Any idea if this book is worth any more than any other FF 88?
Thanks!

the general rule for comics seems to be that british price copies are usualy worth less than or the same price american but there are probably exceptions to this rule lol

Depends on the comic, some british editions are more worth more because they are harder to find.

Some collectors regard the British priced editions as more collectible, some as less (since they regard them as 'reprints'). In fact, neither point of view makes much sense as the British priced editions were created as part of the same print run as the American editions, on the same machine in the same building on the same day: they just changed the plate containing the price details near the end of the print run for the export copies. In every other way, they're absolutely identical to copies with the US price.

True, I consider them price variants & treat them as such :)

In about 1981, they began putting the US, UK and Canadian prices in the same box, which must have made things a lot simpler...

I always feel like alternatively priced comics weren't made for me, but someone else entirely. It's weird.

Why? The content was exactly the same. Does the price matter?

Well, for me I want a complete collection of the the series but collect price/cover variants as "bonus" issues.

But the price being British doesn't stop that copy being legitimate, does it? So it's still a complete collection regardless! Sorry, not being obtuse but I've never understood why this is an issue for some collectors-I have to have comics in a reasonable condition in my collection, no obvious defects, but the price details have never mattered to me-my collection of seventies stuff is made up of pence and cents copies in pretty equal measure. I rarely even notice which they are.

I see your point, my problem is probably "ocd driven" that i want complete collections including variants so if there is more than one out there i want them all & seeing a price variant reminds me that there is another variant i do not have. another example is when marvel & gladstone both distributed disney comics. I want both covers but having one marvel then one gladstone really annoys me.
